Your MN Permits to Purchase & Carry
Alright, folks—ready to get serious about your permit to purchase or carry in Minnesota? In the state of Minnesota you are required to have a permit to purchase or a permit to carry in order to purchase a handgun or anything with a removable pistol grip and high capacity magazine (such as an AR or an AK).
Permit to Purchase
In Minnesota, a permit to purchase is your golden ticket to snagging a handgun or any firearm with a removable pistol grip and high capacity magazine (yes, that means your classic AR platform). Here’s the good news: the process is straightforward and won’t cost you a dime.
Here’s how to make it happen
Fill Out the Application
Go get the application form. It’s not rocket science – just a few basics so the powers that be know who you are.
Turn It In
No mailing this baby in – you’ve got to show up in person. Head over to either the police chief in your city or, if you live outside of city limits or your city does not have a city police chief, the county sheriff’s office.
Bring Your ID
Government-issued photo ID, like your driver’s license. They’ll need a copy, so don’t leave home without it.
Wait a Hot Minute
Law enforcement has a maximum of thirty days to process your application. Once it’s approved, they’ll mail you a permit card. Sign it, stash it, and you’re officially ready to buy it for the next year.
No hidden fees, no sneaky fine print. Just you, your ID, and the green light to make your next purchase.

Permit to Carry
For When You Want to Have It, Well, On You
Minnesota’s permit to carry goes the extra mile – not only does it let you carry a loaded handgun, but it also acts as your permit to purchase. Sure, it takes a little more time and effort, but the perks? Totally worth it. Here’s what you need to get it done:

Turn In Your Application – In Person
Here’s what you’ll need to hand over to the county sheriff’s office:
- A copy of your course completion certificate
- A copy of your ID – the government-issued kind
- The completed application form
- The fee: $100 for first-timers, or $75 if you’re just renewing
Wait It Out (But Not Too Long)
The sheriff’s office has up to 30 days to process everything. Once approved, you’ll get your permit card in the mail. Keep it close – now you’re good to carry and buy for the next five years.
Of course, if you’ve got questions or a situation that doesn’t quite fit the mold, feel free to reach out to us or contact your local sheriff’s office.
