First Successful Hunt of the Season

Ahhh, the sweet, sweet joy of hunting opener!

Ahhh, the sweet, sweet joy of hunting opener!

Ahhhhh.  We’ve all been waiting for hunting season to start and, ladies and gentlemen, it’s finally here!  Black bear season opened on September 1st in Minnesota.

Dad, Zach and I try to get up in Northern Minnesota every year for a little R & R, a little beer drinkin’ and a lotta bear killin.  My Dad grew up in Northern Minnesota and we still have some family there that are awesome black bear guides.  So, every year, we take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and sit in the quite of the woods for a few days.

There really isn’t anything better for stress relief than sleeping in, sitting in the middle of the quite woods by yourself and stocking your freezer full of delicious bear meat.  We get unplugged for awhile and simply listen to the breeze rustle through the leaves and watch the wildlife…this is what life is about.

This year has been a very successful year already!  Both Dad and I filled out our tags on the first night of bear season… which is pretty lucky.  Zach has seen a little action around the bait but not anything shootable.  Check below for the sow and two cubs he saw!  Then, see below for my all-time favorite bear recipe!

Slow-Roasted Bear Roast

1 medium bear roast
1 large yellow onion
1 12oz can of Coke
1 packet of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix

This is the easiest recipe ever.  Just throw the roast in the crockpot and pour the can of Coke over the roast.  Then, sprinkle the soup mix on top of the roast, throw the onion in and let it cook on low for about 8 hours or until it falls apart with a fork.  It’s delicious.  Really, really delicious.

Sometimes I throw in potatoes and/or carrots too!  Let me know how you like it!
